Light or Dark wood?
Which do you prefer? I love dark wood.
Cleaning Laminate Floors
We just replaced all the carpet in our house with a dark wood laminate floor. It looks absolutely beautiful, except that I can't figure out how to keep it clean? What am I suppposed to use when mopping the floor? Everything I try leaves a foggy film on the floor... I'm so disappointed and don't know what I'm supposed to do to make them look as beautiful as they did the day they were installed! Can anyone help?
How to take the stupid stuff off my book case?
When I moved apartments a couple of months ago, my dad paid some of his friends to move my stuff. Well, they knocked a book case of mine into the wall, and apparently they (the maintenance guys) had repainted before I moved in. Some of the paint is now on my book case, and I cannot get it off. I've tried scraping it with something that wouldn't take the wood varnish off (it's real wood, dark wood, maybe cherry?), but there isn't anything like that effective. I've tried putting the dark Pledge over it to stain the paint on the wood, but that didn't work. I tried something called Goo be Gone, but that didn't work because after all, I'm trying to remove white paint, not sticky stuff. Any ideas?
Worth Reading - A Passage from a book
Take from this what you will…… A passage from Broken Open: How Difficult Times Can Help Us Grow By: Elizabeth Lesser Brief summary of this person: she’s very depressed and her life is falling apart. Her very good friend is very concerned about her and convinces her to go to Jerusalem with her. Her friend is a tour guide. She’s so concerned that she pays her friends fare. When this woman is in Jerusalem she realizes her problems are still with her. She wonders into this store in Jerusalem:“One narrow, dusky shop appealed to me, and I went in. On the floor was a patch work of persian rugs. On the walls hung small paintings, some of saints and prophets, and others of mountains and flowers. Was this a gallery? A rug store? A gift shop? I couldn’t tell. In the back of the long room, drinking tea at a low table, sat two Arab men dressed in white caftans. One was a stooped and aged gentleman, and the other –his son perhaps – was a mysterious looking character with gleaming eyes and long, black hair like the mane of a well groomed horse. After a while the son put down his tea and came forward to greet me. Fixing his gaze on me, as if trying to read the secrets of my heart (or the...
I Delayed Reading This Book...
Have you ever bought a book that you kept for a significant amount of time before reading it? Well, I have done this on several occasions. The book in question has been in my possession for nearly 20 years. Over the years I have made a start at reading it a few times, but could never get past a few pages. This is odd for me because it is an historical novel and I am a history buff. If you knew me at all, however, you would know that I am not the type of person who ever likes to leave anything undone, so I finally picked up the book once more last week. I am happy to say that I have finished two-thirds of the book(it is very lengthy), and I have significantly increased my knowledge of France during the Middle Ages. So, what book did you have a hard time reading? The name of my book is "In A Dark Wood Wandering" by Hella Hasse.
How is your house decorated
I use to alot of mauvy colors in my last house. Now I have alot of different color beiges. I would say its sort of colonial with dark wood and frilly things. My bedroom has alot beiges and different color blues. The computer room is just a computer room with a couple of wing back chairs that I couldnt fit in my living room.LOL Now you tell me about yours.
Stained vs. Painted Wood
What way do you prefer the wood in your home? I really like the natural look of dark wood stains or even something along the lines of a maple or cherry wood stain. I think painted wood looks too fake and sometimes industrial.
Household Hints
Refinish Antiques or Revitalize Wood: Use equal parts of linseed oil, white vinigar, and turpentine. Rub into furniture (or wood) with soft cloth and lots of elbow grease. For Ease in Sliding: Rub wax along sliding door, windows and wooden drawers that stick.A Simple Polish: For copper bottom cookware: equal portions of flour and salt made into a paste with vinegar. Keep in refrigeratorInstant coffee will work wonders on your furniture. Just make a thick paste of your favorite instant coffee and a little wather, and rub it into the nicks and scratches on your dark wood furniture. For a spicy aroma, toss dried orange and lemon rinds into your fireplace.
Believe In What?
Its the only ghost story i have:I was out in New Hamshire, the Keene Area a while ago spending a weekend at my friends dads home. Her parents had separated a while before and her dad lives alone in a large home that has been in his family for a long time. The home is in an area with lots of woods, not so many neighbors. On the way there my friend simply told me "by the way, its haunted". Your telling me now? I didnt really know how to react so i just waited to see what it was like. The two story house made of dark wood panels with lots of knick knacks everywhere had a welcoming yet not so much feeling to it. We spent a lot of the afternoon in the downstairs den area where we heard someone running, like they were training for a marathon, in the upstairs corridor. Her dad said "its just the ghost, i think its my dad", and nothing more (it was my first time meeting him). My friend was like, "probobly my grandpa". Anyway, night came and we were getting ready for bed. Her dad sleeps downstairs with the TV on the couch everynight even though he has his room upstairs. My friends little sister and friend decided to sleep upstairs with us, but in the room at the far end of the...
